What else could you ask for? A city's listings hovering around around long term highs - double those of the financial crisis, 12.5% of those listings are home to nothing more than arachnids and a developer is getting primed to serve up some off the plan goodies. Fist pump for Devonport.

Devonport's old maternity hospital, a long-term haven for asbestos ingesting vandals, will morph into an art-deco apartment complex.16 ground-level units, 17 units on both the first and second floors, seven third-level units and fourth floor penthouses. After a finance delay and about a year after the developers got their hands on the joint, someone's stumped up the cash for the $10 million development.

Now my response would be obvious by now, but who cares? $10 million into the local construction coffers, can't see anything wrong with that, nor prettying up something more noxious than this blog. But who are these developers kidding? Some of the first responses to the news...
I've just viewed the virtual tour of the proposed art deco apartments - very impressive, I must say! However, considering Tasmania is experiencing a depressed economic climate, and a large number of properties are for sale Statewide, who is going to purchase them? I can't see too many cashed-up interstate retirees wanting to spend their latter years in Devonport. Apart from fresh sea air, what does Devonport really have to offer? The developers must be feeling very confident that this project will turn out to be successful. Good luck to them - I think they'll need it! Posted by Josephine
And to prove Josephine wasn't me masquerading in drag...
Has anyone had a look at how many houses are for sale in Devonport at the moment? I find it hard to believe that this will work, we don't have the population and people don't earn enough money. Posted by Megan B
Of course that's something I'd say, sans Megan's eyeliner, but again it wasn't me. People are noticing those plastic signs hanging around, but developers? I'll steal a shot from grizzly bear, Louis Christoper's site and I'll show you what those behind this development have missed...

Might have something to do with the ailing economy, large debt backpacks being lugged around and jobs being disappeared like they were outspoken opponents of a Central American dictator. Even if the locals don't show any interest, the real estate agent deputised with the duty of flogging the apartments says, they'd be awesome fodder for Victorians who want a weekender where the Spirit of Tasmania docks.

Over to you Victorians, some of us idiot Tasmanians already know the score...
